Audi is going to the frigging moon!

Recently Audi announced the new A4, while this might be exciting for some there is a much more interesting Audi announcement, they are going to the frigging moon!

As part of the Google Lunar Xprize competition where teams are asked to send a lunar rover to the moon, and let it travel 500 meters across the lunar surface while taking some pictures. Audi is supporting and sponsoring a team of scientists from Germany (who have worked eight years with it).

The car-makers role is providing the team with expertise in light-weight construction materials, all-wheel drive and piloted driving. Obviously it is part a PR-stunt and part giving something back to science;

“The concept of a privately financed mission to the moon is fascinating and innovative ideas need supporters that promote them. We want to send a signal with our involvement with the Part-Time Scientists and also motivate other partners to contribute their know-how.” says Luca de Meo, Audi Board Member for Sales and Marketing

The Audi lunar Quattro will be solar powered with four electric wheel hub motors, it will have a theoretical speed of 3.6 km/h, so you will not see Pikes Peak speeds, however the main goal is that the lunar Quattro should operate safely off road and make it the 500 meters needed. The story doesn’t tell what happens to the lunar Quattro after the mission in 2017.
